About the Artist

Bio

With fifteen years of artistic excellence and exhibitions spanning New York, Toronto, Denver, and Los Angeles, Simon Raskina has evolved from an award-winning master of contemporary realism into a distinctive voice of expressive, figurative portraiture. His career—shaped by an analytical grounding in the investment world and the kinetic, raw energy of his tenure as lead vocalist for the Toronto punk band Generation Zero—is defined by a persistent exploration of the human condition.

Raskina’s recent body of work marks a definitive liberation from the technical constraints of his earlier practice. By shifting toward an expressionistic style that marries the bold strokes of Impressionism with a modern, figurative approach, he has unlocked a visual language that feels inherently alive. As noted by critic Kurt Beers, Raskina’s work captures figures that "oscillate between description and collapse," treating the "wobble" of a line as a vital, psychological truth.

These portraits are not merely caricatures; they are a profound "theatre of identity." Through a restricted but highly saturated palette, Raskina explores the performance of the face—capturing vanity, loneliness, and the absurdity of the everyday with a signature blend of satire and deep-rooted affection. By prioritizing the instability and pressure of the human hand, the work rejects the polished "optimization" of the digital age in favour of a visceral, un-programmable soul.

The culmination of this evolution is the solo exhibition, "Laugh Lines," currently on display at the Hotel Victoria in Toronto. The collection presents conceptual portraits that function as a biography, where exaggeration serves to reveal the essence of the subject. In these works, Raskina has escaped the trap of "finish" to prioritize the encounter, inviting the viewer into an intuitive, humorous, and deeply human conversation. Simon Raskina continues to live and work in Toronto, maintaining a practice defined by stylistic exploration and the relentless pursuit of authenticity.
